You are Invited: Calgary Winter Information Fair
On Tuesday, January 16, The Calgary Local Immigration Partnership (CLIP) hosted the first Winter Information Fair in Calgary at the Community Gym in the Genesis Centre from 9:00am to 3:00pm. This event served as an official launch of the First Winter in Calgary webpage that was created by the CLIP Community Life action team, on the City of Calgary Website, to better prepare newcomers for winter in Calgary. In discussions with community members, CLIP had learned that newcomers are not always aware of all the services and programs that are available to them. More specifically, worries around Canadian winter seems to be a major concern for many newcomers. As a result, the webpage and the event were created to meet the existing knowledge gaps in the newcomer population. Whether attendees are new to the city or are long-time resident, this in-person event was the perfect opportunity to discover all of the essentials of being prepared for the winter and the exciting happenings during the chilly season. Attendees had the opportunity to meet a diverse set of community organizations, and service providers who shared valuable information about winter preparedness, programs, tools, and resources in Calgary. Topics included:
Clearing snow from roadways and sidewalks to help yourself and others travel or commute safely in cold weather.
Preparing your home and car for the winter conditions.
Knowing what to do when your car is stuck in cold weather.
Avoiding cold-related illness and injury for your family’s health and safety.
Understanding emotional challenges during the winter.
Accessing clothing, food, shelter and transportation when needed.
Exploring winter activities, and
Knowing who to contact during emergencies.
We have created First winter in Calgary webpage to share tips and resources to prepare you and your family for your first winter in Calgary.
