#YourVoiceMatters Webinar
The Calgary Local Immigration Partnership (CLIP) hosted the first-ever #YourVoiceMatters virtual event, on March 18th at 10:30 am and 6:30 pm via Microsoft Teams. The event was an opportunity for newcomers and new Canadians to learn about the 2021 Municipal Election and how they can get involved with civic affairs. Watch the webinar HERE
#YourVoiceMatters: Calgary’s Next Mayor
CLIP, in partnership with Calgary Public Library, Action Dignity, AIMGA, Centre for Newcomers, Calgary Immigrant Women's Association (CIWA), Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS Alberta), Calgary Region Immigrant Employment Council (CRIEC), Immigrant Education Society (TIES), Immigrant Services Calgary (ISC), hosted #YourVoiceMatters: Calgary’s Next Mayor event on September 28 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. New Canadians to Calgary were invited to join via Zoom to learn more about candidates running to be the next mayor of Calgary. During the event, Mayoral candidates answered questions from newcomer and ethnocultural community members.
The event was hosted by Anila Lee Yuen. Anila is the President & Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Newcomers. Since joining CFN in 2016, with the support of a staff team 170 strong, Anila has grown the agency by $7M, adding nationally recognized programming such as LGBTQ+ refugee supports and indigenous education for newcomers. During the pandemic, Anila co-chaired the Calgary COVID Care Table, where she led the civil society response to assist over 30,000 vulnerable Calgarians. Anila is a past Co-Chair of the Calgary Local Immigration Partnership and was pleased to be hosting this important event.
Applying to be a member of a BCC
CLIP once again partnered with City Clerks to host a webinar, on August 25th, from 12:00 – 1:00 pm, promoting participation in the City Boards, Commissions and Committees as a way for newcomers to get engaged in their communities. This webinar was targeted towards newcomers who may be interested in learning more about the BCC application process, selection eligibility, as well as, the responsibilities and impact of the City’s BCCs. Every year, the City of Calgary looks for diverse Calgarians to volunteer for positions on different Boards, Commissions and Committees (BCCs). The BCC volunteer role involves providing guidance and recommendations to City Council on topics related to finance, accessibility, planning and urban issues, social well-being and much more. The applications opened on August 23 and closed on 4:00 pm Sep 23. Learn more HERE.
